Can you put a swing set on concrete?

Swing sets and other playground equipment should not be placed on concrete, asphalt, or any similar hard surfaces. Concrete does not provide cushion or protection against falls, so it is not considered safe playground surfacing. Commercial playground equipment, like swing sets, should be placed on safety surfacing like rubber mulch, poured-in-place rubber, and wood fiber mulch.

Potential Risks

It's important to note that there are several reasons why concrete is not a suitable surface for swing sets and other commercial playground equipment. In addition to its lack of cushioning and shock absorption properties, concrete can become extremely hot in the sun, burning children's skin and causing discomfort. This is especially true in areas with high temperatures or intense sunlight.

Concrete can also be slippery when wet, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. This is particularly dangerous for young children who may still need to fully develop their balance and coordination skills.

Safety Surfacing Options

Safety surfacing materials like rubber mulch, poured-in-place rubber, and wood fiber mulch offer numerous playground benefits. These materials are designed to provide cushioning and shock absorption, helping to reduce the risk of injury in case of falls. They are also slip-resistant, even when wet, and offer excellent drainage properties to prevent water from pooling on the surface.

Another advantage of safety surfacing materials is that they are typically made from recycled materials, making them an environmentally-friendly option. Additionally, many safety surfacing materials are available in a range of colors and styles, allowing you to create a customized, aesthetic look for your playground.

Overall, while concrete may seem like a convenient surface for playgrounds due to its durability and low maintenance requirements, it is not a safe option because it does not provide support and protection. Safety surfacing materials like rubber mulch, poured-in-place rubber, or wood fiber mulch offer superior safety and performance, making them the ideal choice for playgrounds and other play areas.
